In 2019, Project Synergy was proposed to introduce innovative technologies to operate connected autonomous cars in a platoon formation from Stockport railway station directly to the Arrivals terminal at Manchester Airport. Concurrently, a platoon of three pods will transit passengers to and from a car park in the airport to the passenger terminals. Project Synergy will facilitate inclusive accessible transport for the aged and the visually impaired.

In 2021, the Synergy project will be carrying out trials of driverless vehicles on the A555 in south Manchester. There will be two types of vehicles being trialled; Pods and KIA cars. The pods are designed to drive with no driver on private land and do not have a steering wheel. The KIAs are able to be drive on the public highway (with in agreed parameters) because they have a safety driver who can take control and drive the car as normal.
